Thought I’d explain a little about the material that goes into the timelines I post.

The information comes from such a wide and varied number of sources – everything from old reference books and online sites to current articles in magazines to an article from NY History magazine from 1933, or French’s New York State Gazetteer of the 1860s – it would be impossible to trace all data back to its sources. This would take far more time than putting out new information.

The wonderful thing about the blog format is, as I add new material or make corrections to information already posted, I can go back in and make the changes. The same goes for incorrect information that a blog visitor calls to my attention; it can also be easily corrected. So I welcome any feedback or corrections. If you can cite a source, especially an on-line one, it would be of extra help.

On one other subject – This is your blog, not mine. If you have an article to submit I’d like to get it into the blog. This also applies to any news of upcoming meetings, lectures, etc. applying to Eastern and Central New York. It would be of help to receive such items at least five days before the event is scheduled.

Henry Seymour replaces Joseph Ellicott on the New York State Canal Commission.

New York's canal commission gives the go-ahead to continue the Erie Canal west of Seneca Lake, all the way to Lake Erie.

Two Buffalo Harbor improvement committee members, freight forwarder Charles Townsend and lawyer Oliver Forward, convince non-committee member Samuel Wilkeson to participate in posting the $25,000 personal bond for harbor improvements. (see below).

Transplanted Virginia politician John Nicholas dies in Geneva at the age of 55.

State

Frederick Follett is apprenticed to his brother Oran as a printer on Batavia's Spirit of the Times. ** A brick courthouse is built at Angelica. ** Deeds are issued for property on Geneva’s Pulteney Street, ranging from No. 388 through No. 402. ** James Wadsworth notes that most of the region’s land has been settled. ** Lockport’s Mountain Road (later Main Street) is built, to connect the Lewiston Road at Cold Springs with the Upper Mountain Road in Cambria. ** Jacob Le Roy becomes land agent for the Triangle Tract. ** The River Lock west of Montezuma, built of stone quarried at Union Springs and ferried by flatboat via Cayuga Lake and the Seneca River, is completed. The canal is now open between Utica and the Seneca River. ** John Spicer builds a brick house in the Yates County Town of Barrington. ** Unable to make a success of it in Sandusky, Ohio, Benjamin Rathbun and his family make their way back to Batavia. He soon moves to Buffalo. ** Emma Willard addresses the state legislature on the topic of women's education. ** The state legislature hires Stephen van Rensselaer as president of the Central Board of Agriculture. ** The Greek-Revival Balcom House is built on East Pulteney Street in Bath. ** The Tompkins County Town of Covert is restored to Seneca County. ** Engineer Joseph Miller purchases 100 acres in the Town of Arcadia from Jacob Lusk, builds a frame house and lays out four streets. The settlement is called Miller's Basin (later Newark). ** A state loan of $50,000 made to various upstate counties is transferred by the Loan Commissioners to the Common School Fund. ** Quit rents paid to the state are taken out of the general fund and distributed equally to the Literature and School Funds. ** The approximate date a lawyer’s office is built on Monroe Avenue, near Main Street in Pittsford. Eventually it will be moved across the Avenue and, known as the Little House, will in 1965 become the headquarters/museum of Historic Pittsford Inc. ** Governor DeWitt Clinton appoints Nathaniel W. Howell First Judge of Ontario County. ** Niagara County state senator Archibald S. Clarke is sent to the Fourteenth Congress to fill the vacancy left by Peter B. Porter’s resignation. Clarke serves until next year’s national election in March. ** Sanford Hunt settles along the Genesee River, at what will become known a Hunt’s Hollow, in the Town of Portage. ** The Seneca and Susquehanna Lock Navigation Company is formed, by the directors of the Western Inland Lock Navigation Company, to build a canal from Seneca Lake to the Chemung River. It’s never built. ** The Cayuga and Seneca Canal Company, running low on funds, asks the state legislature for relief. The state complies, permitting the company to issue more stock, with a projected completion date of 1821. ** The Cayuga Steamboat Company is formed, to build vessels for use on Cayuga Lake. ** Silas Newell receives a state charter for Wyoming County’s Middlebury Academy.

Auburn

A theological seminary is established by the Presbyterian Synod of Genesee. ** Bela Coe sells his interest in the former Bostwick's Tavern to his brother Chauncey, returns to Canandaigua and repossesses the failing Stage House hotel, which has lost the stage line franchise. ** The north wing of Auburn prison is converted to single cells.

Buffalo

Lawyer Albert H. Tracy is elected to the first of three terms as a representative in Congress. ** Nine citizens of form the Buffalo Harbor Company, the first local businessmen's association. They are granted a state loan of $12,000 but must put up a bond, personally endorsed by the committee members, of $25,000. Improvement projects this year and next make the mouth of the Buffalo River navigable. ** 96 vessels use the port at Buffalo.

Connewango

Dana Phillips arrives from Vermont. He will later move on to Michigan. Bela B. Post also settles here, later moves on to Iowa. John Farlee and his wife arrive from Genesee County, as does Samuel Farlee. Daniel Whitin also moves in to the settlement. Rufus Wyllys and his family arrive to settle after a 500-mile ox-sled journey from Massachusetts lasting twenty-three days. A blacksmith named Bradner settles here, as well as Chauncy Butler, from Mt. Morris. Russell Pennock arrives, puts up a log house. Peter Blanchard arrives from Vermont, after having lived in Cayuga County a while.

Rochesterville

The population reaches 1,509. ** The city hires its first policeman. ** Moses Dyer opens a chandlery. ** Spring floods again damage the business district. ** The log bridge across the Genesee River's lower falls at Carthage (the future Ridge Road), claimed to be the world's highest wooden single-arch bridge, is completed. ** The route for the Erie Canal through the village is surveyed. ** The village skips its municipal election. ** Irish workers on the Erie canal begin encampments in the future South Avenue area. ** The first wooden sidewalks are installed. ** 500,000 wooden barrel staves are loaded onto wagons on the west side of the Genesee near the future Erie Canal feeder dam this year, then portaged to Hanford's Landing at the lower falls and shipped to Montréal.

Steuben County

Erastus Shepard begins publishing the Western Republican. ** The Steuben County Agricultural Society is founded at the urging of Albany merchant Elkanah Watson.

In 1812, Elkanah Watson exhibited three Merino sheep under the elm trees on the square in Pittsfield Massachusetts. The success of this humble agricultural exhibition encouraged Watson to develop the Berkshire System for Agricultural Society Fairs which became the basis for all county and state fairs. In New York, Otsego County and Jefferson County were some of the first counties to hold agricultural society fairs. Watson developed a variety of activities that showcased the agricultural community - everything from parades to pastoral balls. He was often criticized for his diversions, but he rationalized that it was necessary to offer activities for the entire family in order to attract the entire community to the fair. Whether Watson would have accepted demolition derbies and rock band concerts is a matter of conjecture, never the less, his "innocent recreations" are a legacy that today's fair has inherited. Mrs. Belluscio taught in the Rochester school system for five years. She

was lead interpreter at Genesee country museum and special events coordinator until 1988, has been active in the Leroy historical society since 1988. She is also past chairman of the western New York Association of Historical Agencies and president of the Association of Living History, Farms & Agricultural Museums. For the past three years she has served on the New York State Council of Arts review panel.

Apr 10

The Niagara County town of Wilson is formed from Porter. ** The Erie County town of Amherst is taken off of Buffalo. ** The Cattaraugus County town of Little Valley is taken off the town of Perry (now Perrysburg).

Apr 18

The Great Lakes shipping season for the Genesee River opens. In the next four months 1158 bushels of pearl ash and 120,000 barrel staves are shipped out for export. The total value of the shipments for the season will reach $300,000.

Apr 20

The Oswego County town of Oswego is formed from Hannibal.

Apr 21

The New York State Library is founded, located in the upper stories of the Capitol.

The first loaded boat, with its 16-ton cargo – from Schenectady - passes through the newly completed locks of the Seneca and Cayuga Canal at Seneca Falls, New York. The toll is 50 cents. ** Rochester businessman Daniel Powers is born in Batavia.

Contractor Josiah Olcott signs a contract to build Erie Canal Section 40, east of the Nine Mile Aqueduct, with the exception of the embankment in the immediate vicinity of the aqueduct, which William Melville undertakes. Henry Bogardus and Andrew and William Thompson contract for Section 41, west of the crossing. Benjamin Gumaer contracts for Section 50 and part of 51, to the west of Skaneateles Outlet.

Rochesterville

Nathaniel Rochester moves to Rochesterville from West Bloomfield, settles at the corner of Exchange and Spring streets. ** Construction begins to the east, to carry the Erie Canal through the city's Irondequoit Valley. ** Abelard Reynolds holds the first Methodist services in the city. He is named alderman of the first ward ** Band musicians become too drunk to rehearse. ** The town exports 26,000 barrels of flour, as well as other goods, totaling $380,000. ** Saint Luke's Episcopal Church is formed. ** The Baptists begin meeting, informally. ** Charles Harford's grist mill is destroyed by fire. The Phoenix Mill is erected on its foundations. ** Population reaches 1,049. ** Storekeeper Jonathan Child marries Sophia Eliza Rochester, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester. ** Azel Ensworth builds a two-story tavern at the Four Corners (Main and State). ** The first Sunday School is formed.

We were saddened to learn of the death on Thursday of long-time LeRoy round table member Charles P. “Skip” Charvella. Skip, as we all knew him, died at the age of 64, at Batavia’s United Memorial Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Friends may call on Monday, December 26, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia. His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Resurrection Parish - St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to UMMC for the Hospice Care area or your favorite animal shelter.

Outgoing governor Daniel D. Tompkins, recently elected U.S. vice-president, sends a message to the state legislature recommending that a date be fixed for the abolition of slavery within the state. In an election to replace Tompkins as governor De Witt Clinton will defeat Buffalo’s Peter Buell Porter.

Publisher Horatio G. Spafford puts out the 12th and final edition of his American Magazine - a monthly miscellany.

March

New York State's Bank of Geneva (today's National Bank of Geneva) is chartered.

Naturalist and fish expert Seth Green is born in Carthage (later part of Rochester).

Mar 21

The village of Rochesterville is taken off the towns of Brighton and Gates and incorporated, acquiring a charter. It has a population of 500.

Apr 5

The Niagara County town of Royalton is formed from Hartland.

Apr 7

Tompkins County is formed from Cayuga and Seneca counties. The county courthouse is fixed at Ithaca.

Apr 15

The state legislature authorizes construction of the Erie Canal, after Federal backing is denied.

May 5

Rochesterville holds its first village elections. Francis Brown is elected mayor of the newly incorporated village, which now includes the annexed Frankfort. Also picked are five Trustees, three Assessors, a Treasurer, a Comptroller, a Constable, three Fire-wardens and a Pound-keeper. The office of mayor is merely that of president of the Board of Trustees.

Population: Ontario County - 42,032. ** The first printing press in Chataugue (sic), Livingston and Yates counties. Hezekiah Ripley begins publishing the Advertiser and Genesee Farmer, at Livingston County’s Moscow. ** A shipping dock is built three miles from the mouth of the Genesee River, followed by a wooden arch bridge - the longest in the world - across the river's gorge. The new settlement is called Carthage. The steamboat Ontario out of Sackets Harbor is the first to arrive at the landing. ** 5,000 bushels of flour are shipped out of the Genesee River to Montréal during the last three months of the season. ** Port Gibson, in the future Wayne County, is settled. ** Colonel Nathaniel Rochester attends a session of the legislature at Albany in an usuccessful attempt to get recognition of Monroe County. This year he is also made secretary of the convention meeting in Canandaigua to consider De Witt Clinton’s canal proposal. ** Batavia banker Trumbull Cary builds a post-colonial house on East Main Street. ** The Wyoming Academy is founded. ** Vermont native James Battles arrives in the Connewango area to settle. ** Seneca County annexes part of Tompkins County. ** Porter constructs a Niagara River bridge to Bath (later Green) Island. It will be swept away during the ensuing winter. ** Alden sawmill owner John Rogers builds the town’s first grist mill. ** A Methodist class is begun in Canadice. ** Mack & Shepherd buy the Ithaca Journal . ** Botany lecturer Amos Eaton publishes A Manual of Botany for the Northern States . The popular work will go into eight editions. ** Rush coal merchant H. H. Babcock is born to Isaac and Elizabeth Wilbur Babcock, in Albany County. ** NY-to-Liverpool packet captain William Henry Stewart saves the life of a passenger, the daughter of merchant George Ragg, when she’s swept overboard. The two marry and settle on land outside of Penn Yan given to them by Ragg. ** Horatio Spafford publishes the pamphlet Hints to Emigrants, on the Choice of Land, under the pseudonym Agricola. ** Moses Rathbun and his son Benjamin, running business enterprises in Monticello and Hartwick Township respectively, go bankrupt. Moses moves his extended family from Otsego to Batavia. ** Canal commisioners authorize a further 25% increase in capitalization for the Cayuga and Seneca Canal Company. ** Engineer Canvass White travels to Europe to study canal construction. ** James Van Horn, his Newfane mill destroyed by the British in the last war, rebuilds his gristmill. He will add a sawmill and begin work on a brick mansion. ** Eleazor and Mary Southworth build a home at the four corners in Elba. ** Canandaigua lawyer John C. Spencer is elected as a representative to the Fifteenth U.S. Congress, as is New York surveyor and Holland Land Office agent Benjamin Ellicott. The state’s canal fund will receive its revenue from auction duties and salt duties. ** Syracuse doctor, lecturer, and theater owner John Weiting is born.

Erie Canal

Chief engineer Judge Benjamin Wright appoints David Stanhope Bates assistant engineer on the middle division. ** The steamboat passenger tax, established this year to help pay for state canals, brings in $19,000 in revenue for the year.

Buffalo

The open boat Troyer brings Buffalo the first flour from the west. ** The Federal government builds a 30-foot lighthouse on Lake Erie near Buffalo Creek.

Le Roy

Orange Ridson creates a map of the Triangle Tract. ** Judge Egbert Benson, Jr. becomes the third land agent for the tract. ** Innkeeper James Ganson purchases additional property, on the Village Green.

Rochesterville

The population reaches 700. ** Austin Steward, a black grocer, goes into business. ** Spring floods damage the business section. ** Elisha Johnson and Orson Seymour lay out a subdivision on the east bank of the Genesee River. ** A mill is built on Water Street. ** William Atkinson builds the Yellow Mill, the first to make use of the newly-opened Johnson millrace. ** The approximate date Dr. Matthew Brown and his brother Francis arrive from Brookfield, Massachusetts. Their remodeled cotton factory is destroyed by fire, the community's first large one. They will rebuild on the same site. The village's first volunteer fire company is organized. ** The pamphlet "Constitution and Proceedings of the Charitable Society formed in the Western Counties of State of New York, for the Education of Indigent Pious Young Men for the Gospel Ministry " is printed by A. G. Dauby. ** Matthew Dryer of Massachusetts purchases 81 acres in the Brighton area, including the grist mill of John Tryon. ** The Granville, Massachusetts, family of Ezra Parsons arrive in the Allens Creek area.

S. Alfred

Auburn

Judge Elijah Miller has a house built in Auburn. He will give it to his daughter Frances and her new husband William Henry Seward in 1824. Carpenter Brigham Young works on the house. ** Auburn Prison is built. ** The original Auburn Academy is destroyed by fire.

Bath

The approximate year David Rumsey attempts to revivie the Farmers’ Advocate; the paper lasts about a year. ** A two-square -mile area based on Pulteney Square is incorporated into the village.

Buffalo

The city is reincorporated. ** The Old Red Warehouse is built on the waterfront just north of Main Street. ** A request for harbor improvement funding is sent to Albany. Only a survey results.

Geneva

Hardware merchant Phineas Prouty, Sr. begins advertising in local newspapers. He joins the first fire company, formed this year. ** Branchport landowner John Beddoe advertises 5,000 acres for sale, in the Geneva Gazette.

Pittsford

A house (later known as the Guetersloh house), is built on Church Street, for the village’s first doctor, John Ray. ** Village Presbyterians begin meeting in a frame house at the Milepost.

Rochesterville

Pioneer Oliver Culver builds a house and tavern on East Avenue. ** Pioneer Ashbel W. Riley arrives. ** Elisha Johnson buys eighty acres of Enos Stone's farm on the eastern bank of the Genesee River for $10,000. ** A cotton mill, utilizing 1,392 spindles, is built. ** The population totals 331 at the beginning of the year, approaches 500 toward the end. ** Albany printer Everard Peck, a native of Berlin, Connecticut, moves his business here. ** Forms for "Petitions for a Division of the Counties of Genesee and Ontario" are printed here, the first printing job in the village. Forms will be made up again in 1818, 1819, and 1820. ** Matthew and Francis Brown, Sr. have a 1200-foot mill race dug along the western rim of the Genesee River gorge.

Sackets Harbor

The Ontario, the first steamboat on the Great Lakes, is launched. ** Construction of the Madison Barracks military post is begun.

Steuben County

The board of supervisors, contravening last year's decision to not pay Indians bounties on wolves and panthers, pays Tall John, a Bath-area native, $27.50 in bounties on wolves. ** The county’s tax levy amounts to $11,696.61. **

1822 Central NY Canal Excursion

INTERESTING EXCURSION.

The opening of the Erie canal has given a celebrity to the western part of this state, which without this great enterprise, it would have probably taken many years to acquire. Its fertile soil, its extensive and internal water communications, and its beautiful and variegated scenery begin to attract the attention of travellers and strangers. No portion of our country will within a few years be able to compete with us in prosperity and improvement. Blessed with a climate equally removed from the scorching rays of a torrid sun, and the rigor of a polar winter, all the necessities of life, may be produced in the greatest abundance: and whatever surplus ins produced, may, by means of the canal, be transported at a moderate charge to sure and profitable markets.

I have been led, Mr. Editor, to these brief reflections, from a short excursion I lately made down the Cayuga Lake to Montezuma, and a few miles on the canal. A more agreeable and pleasant excursion than this cannot be made in our country. The shores of our beautiful Lake are not surpassed by any other in this country, and perhaps in the world. In passing from Ithaca to Cayuga Bridge, we have a delightful and gradual transition from loft and elevated banks, rising with a gradual ascent to the height of five hundred feet but all susceptible of the highest cultivation, to scarcely fifty feet above the level of the Lake.

Many elegant and well-cultivated farms, line the shores of this delightful Lake; and here and there a village crowns its banks, apparently resting in ease and opulence. Prominent and appearance rises Aurora, on the easter shore of the Lake twelve miles from the Bridge. It contains between thirty and forty houses, some of them elegant, and all neat and rural. The Lake is here 4 miles wide, and the opposite shore in a high state of cultivation. Here are a male and female Academy, both in a flourishing state; and indeed its rural secluded situation, points it out as the seat of the muses. The Academic groves, and the rippling waters, carry our imaginations back to the ages of ancient Greece, to the days of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle.

Two miles below Aurora, Savanna Point projects into the Lake - a most delightful situation, and to the man of taste and rural disposition, a most desirable residence. Four miles below this, is the village of Union Springs. This has the appearance of being a thriving little spot. A large spring affording sufficient water to move a flouring mill and other machinery, gives importance to that place.

Below this, commences the chain of beds of Gypsum, of more real value to the country than the same quantity of precious metals. These quarries produce annually several thousand tons of this substance, which is consumed in the country around the Lakes, and large quantities sent up the Lake to Ithaca, from thence transported to the Susquehanna river, and floated down its current to the interior of Pennsylvania. This trade was carried to a very great extent during the late war.

From the village of Union Springs, in passing down he Lake, the Cayuga Bridge can in a clear day be perceived, stretching like a line more than a mile in length across the Lake; and the villages of East and West Cayuga, present a very pleasing appearance as they are approached from the south.

The west side of the lake, though destitute of any villages on its shores, is by no means devoid of interest. The great number of delightful farms cultivated to the very water's edge, and a number of projecting points of land, give a pleasing variety to the scenery. Some of those points have an enchanting effect upon the traveller, as they are approached. They are level plains, evidently produced by the alluvian deposits of the streams in their immediate vicinity, clothed with scattered elms and maples, and destitute of underbrush. In passing them, one is reminded of the tales of a fairy land.

This lake is becoming the channel of a very considerable commerce. It is the connecting link of a very extensive, rich, and flourishing country, with the great canal. A Steamboat has been in operation two seasons on the lake. The public are in a great measure indebted to the enterprise and public spirit of Oliver Phelps, Esq. for this eligible and delightful conveyance. The boat is more than a hundred tons burthen, handsomely fitted for the accommodation of passengers, and every attention is paid to their comfort and wants, by Mr. Phelps, who superintends himself.

Mr. Phelps has lately constructed a ingenius horse-boat to ply between the Bridge and the canal at Montezuma. This boat is a pleasing change from the monotonous movement of the canal boats, to the more animated motion of the American Water Coach, as the proprietor has very happily named it. The conveyance in this boat is pleasant and safe. It is handsomely fitted for the accommodation of twenty or thirty passengers. It reflects great credit on the projector and proprietor, and it is to be hoped that his enterprise will be justly appreciated and rewarded.

The Holland Land Company builds a limestone fire-proof land office building. It will become the Holland Land Office Museum. Total cost for the building and a retaining wall behind the building for the Tonawanda Creek - $8,593. ** Trumbull Cary is appointed postmaster, taking over the position held by his brother Ebenezer. ** The village takes over the entire building that had housed the courthouse and a tavern. ** Hinman Holden builds a three-story frame inn in the Town of Batavia.

Buffalo

The city is rebuilt. ** The Buffalo Baptist Association is organized, with 21 churches and 2,512 parishioners. ** George Coit has a Federal-style house built, on Virginia Street. ** Former Connecticut medical student Albert H. Tracy begins practicing law in Buffalo.

Pittsford

The first newspaper in the Monroe County area is published here. ** The approximate date Vermont transplant Caleb Hopkins builds a house on South Arab Street (later Clover Street). ** Methodist circuit preachers begin coming through.

Rochesterville

The First Presbyterian Church of Rochester is founded. ** Elisha Johnson lays out the first Court Street. ** Lyell Street is created. ** Josiah Bissell and Hervey and Elisha Ely build the Red Mill, near the western end of the Genesee River bridge at Main Street. ** The village's first wedding ceremony is celebrated. ** Flour Merchant Wickens Killick is born. ** Brothers Francis and Matthew Brown start the Genesee Manufacturing Company at the upper falls of the Genesee River. ** Settler and school commissioner Enos Blossom helps found the first Allens Creek school - four others will follow on the site – on land belonging to Eleazer Bingham. Seabreeze Memories: “The Park When you were a Kid” will be the topic of a presentation by Matthew Caulfield at the Nov 8th meeting of the Greece Historical Society. Caulfield, archivist of Seabreeze Amusement Park, will share his knowledge of the history of this, the fourth oldest park in the United States. Rosemary O'Keefe

Rose O'Keefe grew up in the suburbs of New York City, except for four years as a girl living with her family outside Paris, France. After graduating from SUNY Potsdam, Rose moved to Rochester, New York, and discovered the Genesee River Valley and Finger Lakes on camping outings.

Since then, she has become a history author with a special interest in the Frederick Douglass family's years in Rochester from 1847 to 1872. She enjoys presenting slide shows on Rochester's South Wedge, the southeast side of the city, the Douglass family, and most recently, an "Armchair Tour of the Genesee Valley."

David:

Looking back to 2004 or 5, what decided you to work on the South Wedge book for Arcadia?

Rose:

I had already volunteered for The Wedge neighborhood newspaper for a number of years, had printed a history series in it in 2000 and was having informal History Club meetings in our Highland Branch library. In early March 2005, S.W.P.C. (South Wedge Planning Committee) board member David Halter handed me the proposal form for an Arcadia book, and told me to take it, I was the only one who could do it.

So, I casually printed out some captions for a few black and white copies of local sites, cut the captions and taped them on each page and then mailed it all in. To my surprise, Arcadia accepted the proposal and said they had a gap in their publishing schedule and if I could, my deadline was the end of May.

I thought of The Wedge deadlines and figured I could do it. Ha! Little did I know.

It took weeks to contact people, borrow their family photos, have copies made, return them to the owners, and keep at until I had 200 images and captions, but I did it.

As a total newbie to this process, my learning curve was pretty steep and unlike some people, I did't have access to an exising collection of old photos.

I had to scout and search for all of them as well as pay for prints of many of them.

David:

What were your primary sources? (I'm assuming the Rochester Public Library and its photo collection provide much of the visual information).

And did any of the photographs come from sources other than the library, such as the private collections of residents?

Rose:

Quite a few came from family photos of people I knew or knew of, in the South Wedge area. One of my main contributors, to whom I dedicated "Rochester's South Wedge" (Arcadia 2005) was Josh Canfield, who grew up in the neighborhood and loaned me family photos and vintage postcards from his large collection.

I was more than half-way through the project before I stumbled into Rochester Public Library's online image collection.

At some point, I spent hours sorting through the City of Rochester Photo Lab's collection of vintage slides.

They had about a dozen binders that have now been merged with the library's online collection.

I would also ask my husband to take a ride so he could take pictures of things I needed, like an old willow tree in Mount Hope Cemetery.

I'm not shy about calling people and asking if I can borrow photos. Most people are pretty friendly, but if I had a dollar for everyone who said someone in the family has a box of pictures in the attic (or closet) but I'll have to call them first and get back to you. Well, that's the way it goes.

But after the first book came out, a number of neighbors called to say they had pictures that would have been good in it, and since I knew what I was getting into, I did the research for "Southeast Rochester" (Arcadia, 2006) much more easily.

After that, my learning curve for Historic Genesee Country (History Press, 2010) was even better, but the technological changes have been both a blessing and a challenge.

Searching through vintage books in the Local History at the downtown library is one of my favorite things to do now. You can get any page from them scanned for a dollar. What a fabulous deal. I used that quite a bit for HGC.

Getting my computer to shake hands and talk to theirs for some reason was not smooth for almost a dozen images, but I kept at it.

David:

What publishing venture are you working on currently?

Rose:

Because Historic Genesee Country has a specific format and length, I had way more information for it than fit in that book.

So I've decided to put a lot of the extra information and juicy little tidbits into a blog. It's been up for several weeks now, and I figure once I get fifty or so entries, I'll have enough for an e-book. Once I learn how to do something technical, I can generally understand the process, but it took me a long time to figure out how to 'enter' my entries on my own website.

Now I have to learn how to add images. I don't know yet if that slows things down too much or not. Some feedback from readers would help on that. I also have to learn how to do photo albums on Facebook. That's on my list of to-dos.

David:

What writers and historians have inspired you from early in your career or your avocation?

Rose:

That's what got me started. I'd read something like Henry's Clune's The Rochester I Know and get all excited. He's such a fabulous writer and he was describing places and events I knew nothing about. I had also fun taking one whole winter to read all that tiny print in Orsamus Turner's rambling Pioneer History of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase.

Blake McKelvey's history series online are great starting places, but I often wanted much more specific information that he shares, so I had to do my own digging after that.

David:

Any advice for would-be writers/historians?

Rose:

Once you get started on a project, remember to breath, eat right and exercise. The pace and pressure of my first two books wore me down and it's taken a few years to get my stamina back.

David:

Another point of interest that occurs to me is of your not only living in the Wedge now, but also of your having lived near Paris. Both of which may be considered more-or-(perhaps)less "Bohemian". Scarsdale "suburbs of New York" was probably a different matter. Do you think any of these residencies may have helped fuel an interest in history? If so, in what way?

Rose:

Some people know my family lived outside of Paris from 1957 to 1961. What they may not know is that several of us kids had the experience of total language immersion cold turkey. Four of us went to a French Catholic girls' school and had to hang in there until we understood what they were saying. My mother said we cried every day for several months before we caught on. By the time we moved back to the same house and school that I had left, I spoke French better than English and didn't feel like an American until I left home to go to college. So, even in a middle class New York City suburb, I never saw things the same after we moved back.

Coming to Rochester after college in the early seventies, I knew next to nothing about this area and was able to get to know it with fresh eyes.

an area of Smallwood, located southeast of "Rochesterville". Pittsford is named

by resident and former Vermonter Caleb Hopkins for his home town in New England.

Colonel George Mitchell and 336 men march from Sackets Harbor to garrison Fort

Oswego. They find no usable arms but do inventory $8,000 worth of liquor and

provisions. Mitchell orders close to 4,000 gallons of whisky destroyed.

The Town of Sweden is created out of the Triangle Tract's Town of Murray.

Three British boats enter Sackets Harbor, are discovered and fired upon before

they destroy any U. S. ships.

May 1

The first U. S. defenders - under Colonel George E. Mitchell - arrive at Oswego’s

Fort Ontario.

May 5

British naval commander Sir James Yeo proceeds with his fleet to Oswego, along

with a large body of troops under Lieutenant-General Sir Gordon Drummond,

to storm the fort. They arrive offshore and fire a few shots into the village. One

strikes the chimney of Daniel Hugunin’s house. Few other shots are effective, and

at sundown the fleet moves off to prepare for the next day. ** Americans

T. S. Morgan, P. T. Newton, James Stephenson, William Squires and Commissary

Matthew McNair occupy “Half Moon Battery” in the old French Fort at Oswego,

today and tomorrow.

May 6

Colonel Mitchell and his troops prepare for an attack. Dawn brings fog; when it

clears the British are discovered close in, the flagship St. Lawrence directly off from

the fort, in the middle of the line. At 10 o’clock the bombardment is begun, lasting

until 1:30, when the British land below the Fort, and attack on the north side.

Captain Miulcaster I severely wounded. Lieutenant Daniel Blaney is killed; from

40 to 50 men are killed or wounded.. Mitchell and his troops escape through the

south gate, and march to the U.S. Warehouse at Oswego Falls, tearing up bridges as

they pass. The enemy enters the fort and marches through the village, destroying

property and arresting prisoners, among them McNair, Morgan and Stephenson.

A Mr. Dougherty’s blacksmith shop and the home of the widow Montgomery are

burnt. A schooner and three boats are taken.

May 7

The British sail from Oswego.

May 15

The British fleet is sighted from Pultneyville. General John Swift arrives with

close to 130 men. Townspeople convince him to permit one of them to go to

the enemy with a flag of truce and offer them the contents of a storehouse at

the water’s edge. The British land. They only find some moldy flour, other

supplies having been moved away earlier.

Swift’s forces begin harassing fire from a nearby woods. A small number of

the British fire at the snipers and take two U. S. prisoners. Meanwhile a British

soldier ransacking a chest on the second floor of Whipple’s Tavern is killed by

a stray bullet fired by his own side. The British board their fleet and sail away,

taking two Americans - Whipple Tavern bartender Richard White and Samuel

Ledyard warehouse clerk Prescott Fairbanks. The two will be taken to Halifax

then released a few months later.

May 28

U. S. ships enter Sandy Creek to await the delivery of naval supplies from Oswego

to Sackets Harbor. The British learn of the plan. The sounds of artillery are heard

coming from the direction of Sodus.

May 29

The British follow the U. S. ships into Sandy Creek, are ambushed and surrender.

Over 200 officers and troops are captured. New York forces suffer the loss of one

Indian and several men are wounded. The supplies are carried 16 miles overland to

Sackets Harbor for construction of the frigate Superior.

June

Commander Yeo is turned away at Charlotte at the mouth of the Genesee River,

being mislead by local militia into believing their numbers are far greater the they

actually are. The British refuse to believe that the Americans could be intelligent

or clever enough to carry off such a bluff.

Architect Calvin Nicholas Otis is born in Spafford.

Jul 2

General Jacob Brown leads 3600 U. S. troops across the Niagara River into Canada,

captures Fort Erie the next day.

Jul 25

U. S. forces under Brown fight the battle of Lundy's Lane, Ontario, on the Niagara

River. They beat the enemy to a standstill, retreat to Fort Erie. At war’s end, later

this year, he will be appointed commander-in-chief of the American Army.

August

British Lieutenant General Sir Gordon Drummond attempts to capture the blockhouse

and shipyard at Black Rock, fails.

Aug 14

Charlotte Fowler, younger sister of phrenologist Orson Fowler, is born to Horace

and Martha Howe Fowler in Cohocton.

Oct 17

The U. S. abandons its siege of Fort Erie. Part of the fleet retires to Sackets Harbor

for the winter, the rest sail on to Buffalo to wait for the spring.

Construction begins at Sackets Harbor on the U. S. warship New Orleans.

It will become part of the Genesee Country Museum. ** British investor Patrick

Colquhoun is compensated by the heirs of fellow capitalist Sir William Pulteney

for state lands overlooked by the original 1791 survey. Colquhoun had foreseen the

possibility and written it into his contract with fellow investor Pulteney. ** The Ontario

County Town of Canadice experiences a large influx of settlers. ** Lawyer-poet William

Howe Cuyler Hosmer is born to Avon lawyer George Hosmer and his wife. ** Future

Spiritualist conspirator Leah Fox is born to John and Margaret Fox, in Hydesville. **

The McDowell farm is established on Bath Road in Barrington, Yates County. ** Duty

Waite opens a second Cohocton school. ** 23-year-old attorney Freeborn Garrison Jewett

property and to deliver a portion of their crops to pay the taxes on the land. ** Miller

John McKay, a Scotsman from Shamokin, Pennsylvania, builds a two-story house in

Caledonia. ** The approximate date farmer Martin Kieffer arrives in Rush from

Pennsylvania, builds a two-story, eight-room log house. ** The state has 151,846

eligible voters. ** Cayuga Academy in the Military Tract (Onondaga County,

later Cayuga County) is given Lot 89 of Township 3. Onondaga Academy (Onondaga

County) is given Lot 100 of Towmship 1. ** Capital stock for the Cayuga and Seneca

Canal is increased to $60,000. ** Ridge Road, connecting Rochester to Lewiston

along the Niagara Escarpment, is improved. ** Monroe County has a population of

6,945, broken down by town - Brighton (675), Mendon (1,353), Penfield (1,874),

Buffalo

Because Buffalo was burned by the British at the end of last year, blacksmith John

Gilbert moves east to Le Roy. ** Winthrop Fox builds a store at 1 Main Street.

Canandaigua

James D. Bemis issues The Farmer's Diary or Western Almanack, the first almanac in

the Genesee Country. ** A home is built at 295 North Main Street for former U. S.

Postmaster General Gideon Granger. ** St. John's Episcopal Church is reorganized,

holds services in the town hall. ** Young Trenton, New York, businessman Bela Coe

settles here. ** A mail stage leaves here for the west three times weekly.

Penfield

Daniel Penfield builds a flouring mill on Irondequoit Creek which will become

known as The Yellow Mill. ** The approximate date Gideon Cobb acquires the

southwest 100 acres of Lot 61, Township 13, Range IV, where Allens Creek enters

Irondequoit Creek. He will build a farmhouse on the top of a Penfield Road hill,

which will become known as Allens Creek Farm

Pittsford

Perrin Glover sells his inn to M. Kempton. ** John Mann rebuilds his mill, destroyed

last year by fire. Shortly afterwards he sells the mill to make way for the Erie Canal.

Rochesterville

Nathaniel Rochester, Charles Carroll and William Fitzhugh divide up the 100-Acre

Tract among themselves. Gideon Cobb arrives, establishes a cattle and hay yard in

the Tract. ** Nathaniel Rochester is chosen as an elector in the Presidential and

Vice-Presidential elections. ** Yeo will be driven off at Charlotte, inaccurately believing

the number of local militia is larger than it actually is. ** The village's first school is built.

London, England

Former stockbroker and future New York State pioneer David Piffard, living in Paris

since 1802 because of his wife Sarah’s poor health, return to England.

Henry Ford's entry into the tractor business sparked a conflict in the farm machinery industry that had long-term consequences for American life on and off the farm. The lecture uses rare images from the archives of the great tractor manufacturers and depictions of the seasons of agricultural work before the factory farm replaced the family farm.

Cleveland & Sons contracts with the incipient Seneca Lock Navigation Company to erect a lock and dam at Waterloo for $317,646.

The Onondaga County village of Manlius is incorporated.

The newly-organized township of Mendon holds its first town meeting at the home of Thomas Ewer. Timothy Barnard is elected moderator and will run the first post office. Cornelius Treat is appointed assessor.

New York's Seneca Lock Navigation Company is incorporated, with a capital stock of $50,000, and secures the rights from the Western Inland Lock Navigation Company to improve navigation on the Seneca River (eventually part of the Cayuga and Seneca Canal). The legislation sets a minimum lock dimension of twelve feet broad at the base and seventy feet in length between the gates. The company has five years to complete the work and provisions are made for the state to subscribe for 500 shares after the first 1,000 shares are distributed.

Rochester pioneer Ebenezer “Indian” Allan dies in Delaware (in the future Canadian province of Ontario, at the age of 60.

A British naval force strikes at the mouth of the Genesee River (Charlotte), on Lake Ontario, remove some stores and depart. They leave a receipt with Bushnell's store. Flour from Brown’s Mill is moved beforehand to the woods to keep it out of British hands.

British troops under James Yeo, attack Sackets Harbor.

British naval forces attempt a landing at Sodus Point, are rebuffed.

The British land at Sodus unopposed. Not finding any naval stores they burn the village.

U. S. General Peter B. Porter leads a force of militia, regular troops and Seneca Indians, to repulse a British attack at Black Rock. ** Future Geneseo schoolteacher Epaphroditus Bigelow enlists in the 1st Regiment, Connecticut State Troops, under Captain Enos Buell.

Jul 11

British forces depart across the Niagara River to attack Black Rock at 2 AM. They drift past the chosen landing site. After landing, Fitzgibbon's force heads for the enemy barracks and blockhouse, burning them before moving on to Fort Gibson. General Porter slips out in his nightshirt five minutes ahead of Fitzgibbon and heads towards Buffalo and his militia.

U. S. ships drive off a British naval force at the mouth of the Genesee River. ** Epaphroditus Bigelow receives an honorable discharge. ** While the battle of Lake Erie is taking place Seneca Indians in the southern tier assemble to protect Anna Church at Angelica, alone while her husband's trapped in Europe by the war.

Early Pittsford settler Josiel Farr dies at the age of 66.

December

Troops and civilians fleeing the British arrive in Batavia, which will become the central war office. The postmaster’s wife Lucy Brisbane offers to get food for the wounded Winfield Scott’s troops if he will see that her home is protected. The offer is accepted.

British Colonel John Murray captures Fort Niagara from the U. S. ** British General Phineas Riall razes Lewiston.

The British under Drummond attack Black Rock and Buffalo over the next two days. The house of Gamaliel St. John will be the only building to remain standing.

Cayuga County

1360 looms in the county turn out 340,870 yards of cloth annually. Local businesses also turn out 2500 skeins of silk and 60,000 bushels of salt. ** Eliza Davison, mother of John D. Rockefeller, is born.

Le Roy

Postmaster Abelard Reynolds brings his family from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, builds a home on the future site of his Arcade. The first post office opens, west of the Genesee River bridge ** The village gets its first doctor, Jonah Brown, and its first schoolteacher, Miss Huldah N. Strong, who gives her first classes in a temporary schoolroom. Pittsford minister Daniel Brown travels here to preach the first church service, in the upstairs room over Jehiel Barnard’s tailor shop. Preston Smith begins operating a twice-weekly ox-wagon out to Indian Landing, Rochesterville’s first public conveyance. ** A schoolhouse is built on Fitzhugh Street, later the site of the high school. ** East bank landowners Samuel J. Andrews and Judge Moses Atwater hire millwright Eli Lyon to erect a sawmill for them at the brink of the lower falls, for $500. ** The Seneca Indians celebrate the Sacrifice of White Dog for the last time, in today's Livingston Park neighborhood. The ceremony involves the sacrifice of a white dog to expatiate sins. ** An ox-team and wagon begin regular semi-weekly service between the village and Indian Landing, Rochesterville's first public transportation. ** Twenty-two-year-old Hervey Ely arrives here from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, along with his brother Elisha, and friend Josiah Bissel. In five week he’s started his own sawmill.

New Society of the Genesee's Buffalo Visit to Darwin Martin's House

It's only necessary to notify the Muhls by Monday the 26th - with the number in our party - then show up at the Buffalo site by the appointed time. If you enjoy the experience we can get you added to the notification list for next year's meetings. We always welcome feedback. - editor

The October meeting--and final meeting for this year--will be a visit to the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo on Saturday, October 1. The house is considered one of Frank Lloyd Wright's prime achievements. Gerry Muhl has provided the information below and has made the arrangements for our visit and for lunch afterwards.

Our guided tour is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., so please plan to arrive by 10:15 a.m. We will gather at the large glass pavilion next to the site. Tour tickets are $12.00. We will have a guided tour of the main house and grounds for one hour. The last stop is the carriage house gift shop. From there, we will drive one half mile to Buffalo's "Little Italy" for lunch at Guttuso's North End Trattoria, located at 1458 Hertel Avenue (716-235-8070).

After the tour and lunch you may want to visit the Buffalo Zoo, one of the best in the state and only three blocks from the Martin House. The Albright Knox Art Museum and the Buffalo Historical Society are one half mile away also.

DIRECTIONS TO THE MARTIN HOUSE

1. From the large toll booth at the Buffalo end of Thruway, bear left to Route 33 West. Head towards Buffalo on Route 33.

2. Exit from Route 33 onto Route 198 West and head a few blocks to Main Street (Rt 5) Turn right onto Main Street, heading north.

3. Proceed on Main Street to the intersection of Jewett Parkway and turn LEFT (Jewett is well marked). NOTE: Jewett PARKWAY turns LEFT off Main Street, Jewett AVENUE turns RIGHT off Main Street at the same intersection!

4. Proceed on Jewett Parkway to the Martin House, located at 125 Jewett Parkway. Park where you can on the street, as there is no parking lot.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE MARTIN HOUSE TO GUTTUSO'S

1. Head a few blocks on Jewett Parkway to Parkside Avenue (away from Main Street and the Martin House). Turn RIGHT on Parkside.

2. Go about 10 blocks to Hertel Avenue and turn LEFT. (Hertel is a main intersection).

3. A few blocks ahead you will see Guttuso's on the RIGHT side of the street next to a Bank of America. It has big pots of flowers outside. There is free parking in the lot behind the Bank of America or on the street. Lunches range between $8.00 and $12.00. Their website is www.guttusosnorthendtrattoria.com.

A lecture/concert by Dave Ruch

In this concert-and-lecture program, Dave Ruch (www.daveruch.com) presents and tells the stories behind the songs of real “Yorkers” from days gone by – farmers, lumbermen, soldiers, Native Americans, canallers, lake sailors, and more – collected through considerable research and interpreted for all to enjoy with guitar, banjo, mandolins, jaw harp and more. A selection of music from the War of 1812 will also be included.

Dave Ruch from Buffalo, NY is a special musician and performer widely noted for his ability to engage audiences of all kinds. Equal parts historian, entertainer, educator, humorist and folklorist, Dave gives over 300 programs each year at schools, museums, libraries, historical societies, music festivals, professional conferences, cultural organizations and community events. He has performed widely in the northeastern USA, Canada and the UK.

This is a Speakers in the Humanities event, which is free and open to the public, and made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Reservations are not necessary.
